Everything You Need to Know About Your Passport (Before You Book That Trip)

Your passport is your golden ticket to the world—but it’s more than just a fancy ID. Whether you’re applying for your first one or dusting yours off for your next solo adventure, here’s what every traveler should know to avoid last-minute surprises, border hiccups, or missed flights.

Let’s break it all down, no jargon, just real info you actually need.

How Long Is a Passport Good For?

In the U.S., an adult passport is valid for 10 years.
But here’s the catch: Many countries require at least 6 months of validity beyond your arrival date. Even if your passport technically hasn’t expired yet, some places won’t let you in if you’re too close to the expiration.

Just Go Solo tip:
If your passport is within 9 months of expiring, start the renewal process now, especially if you’re planning to go abroad.

Passport Photo Requirements

Say goodbye to selfies, passport photos have rules. Here’s what the U.S. requires:

  • Must be taken in the last 6 months
  • Plain white or off-white background
  • No glasses, hats, or filters (sorry, not even Valencia)
  • Neutral expression or natural smile
  • Size: 2×2 inches

You can take one at places like CVS, Walgreens, post offices, or use an online service that mails it to you.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Passport?

  • Routine processing: ~6–8 weeks
  • Expedited processing: ~2–3 weeks (extra $60 fee)
  • Emergency/urgent travel: Appointments available at regional passport agencies, but proof of travel is required

Start early. If you’re even thinking about traveling internationally in the next year, get it going now.

What If You Run Out of Pages?

Unfortunately, you can no longer add pages to your passport.
If your passport is getting full and you still have time left before it expires, you’ll need to apply for a renewal and check the box for a large passport book (which comes with 52 pages instead of the standard 28).

Frequent traveler? Always opt for the large book, it’s the same price!

Always Carry a Copy (and a Backup)

Losing your passport abroad is a major pain, but a copy can save the day.

Print a copy and keep it separate from the real thing (in your hotel safe or a different bag)
Take a photo and email it to yourself or save it in a secure cloud service
Bonus: Keep a copy of your passport photo page with your emergency contact info

What You’ll Need to Apply or Renew

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship (original or certified birth certificate, previous passport, or naturalization certificate)
  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Passport photo (see above)
  • Fees: $130 (routine), $190 (expedited), + optional shipping upgrades
  • Appointment required for new passports or if yours was issued more than 15 years ago

You can apply at post offices, county clerk offices, or regional passport agencies.
